Hats Sizes

Head Measurements/Hat Sizes

Bev's Country Cottage has been my go to website for hat size measurements so I just wanted to share with everyone.

The following information is all from of Bev's website:

Enjoy and happy crafting!

Head Size Chart - knitted or crocheted hats should be made about 1- 1 1/2" smaller aound than the head circumference, as the hats should stretch and sizes are not an exact science! If you make it, someone will fit into it. =)

* Height given is measured BEFORE the brim is already folded up - from the base of the un-folded up brim to the centre top of hat.  They can be made taller if you want a larger brim to fold up.  On newborn hats I plan to fold up about 1" for a brim, on adult hats I usually figure 2" or so for a brim, but this varies according to personal preferenc
e.

The Great Laundry Challenge

Wonder Wash

Cost: $18.99 for my first purchase
$13.99 to have the container refilled

I picked it up at a local store in Woodstock, Ontario called Inside U.

Cost per load: $0.17 per regular load of laundry (1 tablespoon)
or $0.09 per load of diapers (1/2 tablespoon)

So Wonder Wash was my original laundry detergent and the one who started me off on this Great Laundry Challenge. I have been using Wonder Wash for 9 months for all our laundry needs and have loved it up until recently.

I loved how it left our clothes feeling clean and fresh and it worked wonderful on my son's cloth diapers. We never had any issues with staining or stink.

But then we moved. At our previous house we had a water softener (so we had soft water) in our new home we no longer have a water softener and the water is not hard enough to require a softener (so basically it's only semi-hard water). With our semi-hard water my opinion on this laundry detergent changed dramatically within a few weeks the ammonia smell in the diapers began to build and become unbearable quite quickly. I striped all the diapers so we had "clean" ones again but once again in a few weeks the problems were back.

So my overall review of Wonder Wash:
- great if you have soft water
- if you have hard water it is still good for everyday laundry but it was not able to handle the urine in cloth diapers in combination with hard water

Naturally Wise
Cost:
$6.75 for 2 cups
$18 for 6 cups

Cost Per load: $0.18 - $0.21 per regular load of laundry (1 tablespoon)

"Finally, an all natural laundry powder that can handle your laundry needs!
Naturally Wise Laundry Wash contains all natural ingredients that soften water, cleanse, deodorize, and knock out all kinds of stains.  It is free from soaps, perfumes, dyes, fillers, chlorine, phosphates, and phthalates, and if used as directed, it is safe for you, your washing machine, septic systems, and the environment.
Add 1 tablespoon to each load and adjust according to your individual results and needs.  For tough stains, presoak items or make a paste with 2 parts Laundry Wash and 1 part water to apply directly to stains.

Choose unscented or have your Laundry Wash custom scented with one of our essential oils, essential oil blends, or phthalate-free fragrance oils.  The Clean Linen and White Tea and Ginger scents are particularly nice for laundry.
Your Laundry Wash comes in a 2 cup portion (28 loads) in a tin tie bag for $6.75, or 6 cups in a baggie for $18.00. For an additional $.50, you can have a booster of Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap added to your Laundry Wash.  The powder may contain some small lumps due to adding a liquid to the powders, and it is not recommended to use soap on cloth diapers as this can cause build up and repelling issues with your diapers."

I had the pleasure of testing out 3 different scents by Naturally Wise.
Blue Agave
Bamboo and White Grapefruit
Lavender and Peppermint

When the arrived in my mailbox, the scent was wonderful! I am sure everyone with a neighbouring box was jealous.
After going through the was the clothing was left with just a slight scent that was refreshing and not overpowering in anyway. It was great (even my husband noticed how nice and fresh his clothing smelled). I also found that everything felt incredibly soft without having to use any soft of fabric softener (which is not a common product in our home).
I can not stress enough how soft all our laundry felt after using Naturally Wise, it's amazing!
Overall, I really enjoyed this laundry wash. The bamboo and white grapefruit was my favourite scent.

TOP PICK FOR THE SOFTNESS of the LAUNDRY.

Laundry Tarts

$20 per 72 loads
Cost per load: $0.28

Green Baby Clothing Company was generous enough to provide me with a sample of Laundry Tarts to test out.

Green Baby can also be found on facebook.

"Our products are hypoallergenic, 100% vegan and free of phosphates, EDTA, phthalates, parabens, SLS, SLES, nitrates, sulphites and chlorine! What do we use? All natural, safe old fashion ingredients to remove stains, keep whites bright and remove odour and bacteria without masking them with harmful chemical fragrances."

I really loved that Laundry Tarts is so environmentally conscious right down to their packaging which is completely biodegradable.

I found this laundry wash really made those whites come out of the laundry with a bright crisp look.

Diapers (even messy ones) came out beautiful and with a great clean smell. There was absolutely no lingering smell of ammonia.

TOP PICK FOR MAKING THOSE WHITES WHITE.

Eco Soap Nuts

$14.50  for 50 hot, up to 90 cold loads
Cost per load: $0.16 - $0.29
Biodegradable
 Antimicrobial
Hypoallergenic
Perfect for Sensitive Skin, Allergies, Eczema, Psoriasis
100% Natural and Free From Manmade Chemicals
Beneficial For Septic and Gray Water Systems
Sustainable
Fragrance Free
Reusable
Vegan Friendly

I really love the idea behind Soap Nuts; how they are 100% natural, the packaging is minimal and what not but I have to say I did not fall in love with them when using them.

I found it to be a bit tedious looking for the sack of them in the washing machine before tossing the load into the dryer. Of course the loads of laundry that I was hang drying it wasn't an issue.

With cloth diapers they came out of the wash smelling clean (and fragrance free) but there did seem to be quite a bit of staining left on the diapers and inserts after.
(This was easily remedied by hanging them out in the sun for an afternoon but as many of you Canadian's know that is not always an option in the winter months.)
I don't think I will opt to go with eco nuts in the future because I really love to see clean looking stain free diapers.

Homemade Powder Laundry Wash

Mix together:
1 cup washing soda
1 cup borax
1/2 cup of oxiclean

Cost per load: less than $0.05 per load (1 tablespoon)

I can not express enough how much I LOVE this homemade laundry wash.
Everything comes out of the wash looking and small incredibly fresh and clean.
Diapers came out with no odour at all and sparkling clean.
It will definitely be hard for any other wash to compete with this homemade concoction.
Great outcome and GREAT PRICE!
